Welsh waterfalls

PAÍS DE CASCADA

  1. Morning Cascades

One of my favourite waterfalls in wales and perhaps the one that eluded me for the longest time. Finally an image of it im happy with.

  2. Waterfall Country

Morning like over Sgydau Sychryd as Autumn kicks in bringing its colours and specil light

  3. October Falls

One of the prettiest waterfalls in Wales, and boy is there a lot to choose from.

  4. The Snakes Head

This river bites, named after the appearance of fangs on the rock that resembles a snakes head ready to strike.

  5. The Lady in Autumn

Taken in 2015 when she was in a heavier flow after a spell of rain.

  6. The Lady Falls

Taken from further down the river looking back at her majesty, The lady.

  7. Sgwd Gwladus

This is the Lady Falls, its stunning when in full flow but here its mearly a trickle compared to its winter peak.

  8. Sgwd Gwladus, The Lady Falls

In my head the concept was the grace of the lady and the strength of the rock, not quite sure if thats how it translated in the image but i liked it all the same.

  9. The Other Side

Taken by wading out across the pool to the far bank.

  10. Horseshoe Falls

Taken from behind this shows the 3 tiers of this pretty little fall.

  11. Sgwd-Y-Bedol

Translated this means the Horseshoe Falls, obviously because of its shape, again this was at low level on the river and it has three tiers to it which are all very close together.

  12. Full Flow

The same waterfall taken a year earlier in a much heavier flow

  13. Twisting Pools

Having a lower than usual river has its advantages as i was able to walk right up the river bed to capture the Lower Gushing Falls and a pool which is usually covered giving a fantastic water motion on a slightly longer exposure.

  14. Ying & Yang

Two different directional swirling pools make a fantastic pattern at the bottom of the waterfall.

  15. Sgwd Ddwli Isaf

Sgwd-Ddwli-Isaf translated means the lower gushing falls. Its actually two waterfalls here as you will see from the first picture and you can climb up to this one with a little scramble.

  16. The Lower Gushing Falls

Autumn colours and golden leaves with a beautiful waterfall. Photographers heaven.

  17. Autumn Waterfall

Autumn colours just about breaking out in early October at Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf (The upper gushing falls)

  18. Full Flow

A long exposure of one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Wales.

  19. Low Level Revelations

When the water level is low there are many boulders and stones that become visible and make a lovely foreground.

  20. Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf

Possibly the most beautiful waterfall in Wales ?

  21. Fall Light

After a fairly dull start the clouds parted and a lovely glow of light hit the river and gave some stunning Autumn colours too (October 2015)

  22. Autumn Light

A rare burst of light comes out having been stuck with a mostly flat overcast day, it was very welcome.

  23. Down stream

Down stream from Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf as the flow dances over the rocks

  24. Morning Light at Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf

Autumn morning light at Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf brings life to this very special place.

  25. The Upper Gushing Falls

Sgwd-Ddwli-Uchaf translates to the Upper Gushing Falls. Again this is usually much more spectacular at this time of year (October 2016) but a prelonged dry spell meant it was flowing a lot less than usual but it gave me something different to capture from previous shots.

  26. On Top Of Sgwd-Ddwli-Uchaf

This small cascade is directly above the much larger falls named Sgwd-Ddwli-Uchaf. I love the deposits of golden leaves that line the flanks of the waterfall. This is unusually dry for this time of year due to the low rainfall this summer (2016)

  27. Autumn Fall

Love the way this small patch of Autumn leaves collects at the base of this waterfall.

  28. Sgwd-Clun-Gwyn

This was taken in October 2015, i have since revisited it but sadly a huge tree has fallen right across it and it no longer looks quite as nice as it once did. I havent put a picture up from the recent trip as i feel i want to remember this lady the way she was, Glorious. The name translates to "the fall of the white meadow"

  29. Sgwd-Isaf-Clun-Gwyn

Usually you want a waterfall to be in full flow and gushing everywhere, well this year i wanted exactly what i got. Low levels of water made this fall much easier to shoot and i was able to do it from an area that is usually underwater and has a very heavy, fast flow to it so its too dangerous to get too. This year however it gave me the shot i had always had in my head. Translation is "The lower fall of the white meadow"

  30. Autumn Light

One of my favourite images from this years trip (October 2016) The light coming from the opening at the top was beautiful and 4 cascades can be seen in this picture. The lower 2 actually have no name but the two above are continuations from Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn.

  31. Sgwd-Y-Pannwr

Taken in 2015 when the river was in full flow. I have a particualar affection for this waterfall and could quite happily watch it for hours with its many cascades and levels

  32. Fall of the Fuller

Known as the fall of the woolen washer.

  33. Pool of Tranquility

This usually unaccesable area was now available after a bit of a scramble to get in and take advantage of the low water levels.

  34. Sgwd-Y-Pannwr Low Flow

Not quite as spectacular when its in low flow but it does enable you to get to several new areas which you will see from the next few pictures.

  35. Autumn Spring

Leaves settle on the ledges and make an attractive lead for this small waterfall.

  36. Water Water Everywhere

Several off shoots from the main falls of Sgwd y Pannwr

  37. Sgwd-yr-Eira

Prehaps one of the most famous waterfalls in Wales, its certainly one of the most beautiful and one of the few you can walk behind as part of the trail. This was taken last year as i didnt have time to visit it this year sadly. The translation is beautiful and means the fall of snow.

  38. Henryd Waterfall

Henryd falls is the tallest single drop waterfall in Wales. At 90 feet its a very impressive sight but wasnt in full flow on this visit which was a bit of a shame.

  39. Sgwd Henryd

Sgwd Henryd is well know all over the world, it was actually featured in the hollywood movie, Batman - The Dark Knight Rises.

  40. Melincourt Waterfalls

At 80 feet, Melincourt waterall is a pretty impressive sight, especially when in full flow.

  41. Melincourt Waterfall 2

Melincourt flowing over sandstone has impressed many people and even inspired JMW Turner to paint it in 1794.

  42. Aberdulais Waterfall

Aberdulais waterfall at a very low flow sadly when i visited it in October but I have to say its certainly got potential for furture trips.

  43. Lower Aberdulais falls

The lower part of Aberdulais Falls, again in very low flow but would look far more impressive when cascading over the top.

  44. Aberdulais Tin Mine

The water wheel at Aberdulais used to give power to the old tin mine and its quite a sight to see.
